My career path and personal journey have led me into the world of education. Having been immersed in it for the past 9 years I have become focused on the inclusion of technology into all of my classes so I can prepare my students for a life of learning and technology. Technology is an integral part of any successful career in the 21st century. The MAET program has allowed me to develop and hone my skills in creating purposeful lessons using technology that engage students and allow for a deeper level of understanding than before. My students and I are no longer limited to the four walls that exist in our classroom but can take our learning to all corners of the world.
The digital revolution has influenced almost every aspect of modern life, from how we communicate to how we obtain information. Smartphones are now used by more than half of Americans, for example. And more than 80 % of Americans use the Internet, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center.
Yet the integration of technology into education is still relatively uncommon. Only 8 % of teachers fully integrate technology into the classroom, according to a nationwide survey of 1,000 high school teachers, IT staff and students by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, a nonprofit that works to improve education for students throughout New England. The same report found 43 % of students feel unprepared to use technology as they transition to higher education or the workforce.
Today is an exciting time to be an educator. We have access to resources and digital tools like never before. We have the ability to unlock a limitless world for our students that transcends traditional classrooms or school buildings. Technology in the classroom is allowing for deeper learning, critical thinking and collaboration to become the pillars of a sound education tailored to the 21st century. Now is the time to push our boundaries, to test the limits of what we are all capable of and to foster in a new generation of lifelong learners equipped with the skills necessary to accomplish things beyond their wildest dreams.
